Raw-Shock

everydayoccurrences:

Odd thing, those temporary people. That friend of a friend of a friend. The one that you met at the park in August and bummed a cigarette off. The one who added you on the internet because they thought you were cute. They come into your life just long enough to get you to know their name. How old they are. Your mutual friends. And maybe if they stick around an extra week, their favorite music. What curse word they drop most often. What kind of cigarettes they smoke, and how many a day. Their past girlfriends. Their past boyfriends. Where they work. How much they hate their boss.

But ultimately these people leave. They came long enough to say they like your shoes. They like Modest Mouse too. Can you burn me a CD? I hate my boss so much. Can I borrow a lighter? And then they just leave. Maybe your friend of a friend got in a fight with a mutual one and they just didn’t feel comfortable coming around anymore. Maybe they got fired from the job they hated and they’re looking for a new one. No time to hang out. They got kicked out of the house. They don’t have a ride into town. Their phone broke. They felt awkward after making out with you in a drunken stupor on your living room floor and decided it’d be best not to call because they really don’t see this “going anywhere”. Or they never liked you to begin with.

Regardless, you see them once, maybe twice after you’d really last spoken. Maybe you were really good friends for a year or two, and then one day you just weren’t. He was your pal’s brother and he seemed nice at the time, so you hung out all summer. But when you see them working the drive thru or coming out of a gas station, you kind of maybe miss them. Hi, how are you? Long time no see. Did you get a job? Yeah, let’s trade numbers. How have you been? Did you ever find the shoes you left at the park? We should definitely hang out soon.

They never call. Those temporary people never do. They’re concerned with their own temporary people and maybe never even realize that they left you in the first place.
